| 5 | WHEREAS, Charles Sampson Bing, Sr., associate director of |
| 6 | bands for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University at the |
| 7 | time of his death on June 26, 2005, joined the faculty of the |
| 8 | university's music department in 1960 and thereafter devoted his |
| 9 | outstanding musical and teaching talents to the institution, and |
| 10 | WHEREAS, Charles Bing received a bachelor's degree in music |
| 11 | education from FAMU, earned a master's degree in music education |
| 12 | from Indiana University, and did further study at the University |
| 13 | of Illinois, all the while garnering honors such as the |
| 14 | "Outstanding Bandsman Award," which he received in each of his |
| 15 | sophomore, junior, and senior years as an undergraduate student |
| 16 | at FAMU, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, affectionately referred to as "Prof. Bing" by both |
| 18 | students and faculty of the university, Charles Bing was known |
| 19 | for his exceptional musical ability, his attention to detail, |
| 20 | and his insistence on perfection, both musically and |
| 21 | academically; respected for his dignity, humility, and |
| 22 | extraordinary work ethic; and loved for his compassionate |
| 23 | interest in those with whom he came in contact, and |
| 24 | WHEREAS, Professor Bing served in numerous capacities |
| 25 | during his tenure at the university, but he was most noted for |
| 26 | directing the Marching and Symphonic Bands and the ROTC and |
| 27 | University Pop Bands and was unsurpassed in his skills in |
| 28 | formulating, and demanding perfection in the rendition of, the |
| 29 | Marching 100's precise formations, and |
| 30 | WHEREAS, Charles Bing, during his distinguished career, was |
| 31 | the recipient of countless awards; was named FAMU Teacher of the |
| 32 | Year in 1993; and was one of the first recipients of the State |
| 33 | of Florida Teacher Incentive Program Award; but by far his most |
| 34 | cherished honor was the Charles S. Bing Scholarship for |
| 35 | Outstanding Musicianship established at FAMU in 2004, and |
| 36 | WHEREAS, although proudly claimed by FAMU as its very own, |
| 37 | Professor Bing belonged to the music world of the entire |
| 38 | southern United States, where he served as a guest conductor on |
| 39 | numerous occasions, as adjudicator and clinician for many |
| 40 | competitions, and as guest trombonist and consultant throughout |
| 41 | the area, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 43 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 44 | Florida: |

| 46 | That the late Charles Sampson Bing, Sr., Florida |
| 47 | Agricultural and Mechanical University's associate director of |
| 48 | bands and beloved "Prof. Bing," is hereby honored and remembered |
| 49 | with genuine warmth and utmost pride and respect. |
| 50 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| 51 | presented to Mrs. Betty Bing, widow of the late Charles S. Bing, |
| 52 | Sr., as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein. |
