  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution acknowledging the invaluable

  3         contributions of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,

  4         Incorporated, to the people of Florida, and

  5         recognizing March 18-20, 2007, as "The 13th

  6         Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol."

  7  

  8         WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a

  9  public service organization founded on January 13, 1913, by 22

10  outstanding women at Howard University in Washington, D.C.,

11  and

12         WHEREAS, nearly 6 weeks after its founding, the first

13  public act of the sorority was its participation in the

14  Women's Suffrage March demanding voting rights for women, and

15         WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a

16  sisterhood of college-educated women committed to implementing

17  the sorority's mission through its Five-Point Program Thrust:

18  Economic Development, Educational Development, International

19  Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and

20  Political Awareness and Involvement, and

21         WHEREAS, on January 13, 2007, Delta Sigma Theta

22  Sorority, Incorporated, celebrated 94 years of exemplary

23  service and support to local communities, leading dialogue on

24  public policy issues, supporting quality education, and

25  producing new projects to stimulate current and future

26  economic growth, and

27         WHEREAS, the membership of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,

28  Incorporated, exceeds 200,000 college-educated women

29  nationally and 950 chapters worldwide--47 chapters located in

30  Florida and the Bahamas--with women who are focused and

31  visible as corporate and civic leaders, productive public

 1  officials, acclaimed academicians, and activists in their own

 2  right, and

 3         WHEREAS, the Beta Alpha, Kappa Epsilon, Tallahassee

 4  Alumnae, and Gadsden County Alumnae Chapters initiated an

 5  opportunity for Deltas to meet with Florida Legislators to

 6  voice issues of concern annually, and hosted the 1st Annual

 7  Delta Days at the Florida Capitol in March of 1995, and

 8         WHEREAS, for the past 12 years, the sorority's Florida

 9  chapters have conducted "Delta Days at the Florida Capitol" to

10  provide information to state legislators and government

11  executives, assisting in developing public policy; hosting a

12  reception for state legislators and government executives; and

13  monitoring the progress of pending legislation related to

14  significant public policy issues, and

15         WHEREAS, Desinda "Dee" Wood-Carper, 2007 D.D.A.C

16  Chairwoman, and Yolanda Cash Jackson and Sha'ron James, 2007

17  D.D.A.C Co-Chairs, under the leadership of Heddie M. Sumpter,

18  Regional Social Action Coordinator, will introduce the

19  Inaugural Honorable Carrie P. Meek Servant Leadership

20  Luncheon: "A Tribute to Deltas in Public Service," recognizing

21  the contributions that members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,

22  Incorporated, have made locally, regionally, and nationally in

23  the State of Florida, and

24         WHEREAS, on March 18-20, 2007, the members of the 47

25  chapters of the Sorority that now serve Florida and the

26  Bahamas will converge on Tallahassee to conduct The 13th

27  Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol, focusing on a theme

28  of "Leadership, Advocacy, and Empowerment" in taking social

29  action and delivering public services, and

30         WHEREAS, Senator Larcenia J. Bullard, Senator Arthenia

31  L. Joyner, Representative Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall,

 2  are esteemed members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,

 3  Incorporated, NOW, THEREFORE,

 5  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 6  

 7         That the Florida Senate commends Delta Sigma Theta

 8  Sorority, Incorporated, for its contributions to the people of

 9  Florida, and recognizes March 18-20, 2007, as "The 13th Annual

10  Delta Days at the Florida Capitol."
