  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha

  3         Sorority, Inc.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded

  6  at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and

  7         WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first

  8  sorority established by African-American college women, and

  9         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will be a

10  century old January 2008, thereby earning the designation as

11  "Centennial," and

12         WHEREAS, this sorority is an international organization

13  that has approximately 250,000 members in more than 900

14  chapters extending across the United States, the Bahamas,

15  Bermuda, Great Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin

16  Islands, and

17         WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in

18  communities and on college and university campuses in the

19  State of Florida, and

20         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed

21  to community service and has made numerous contributions to

22  the educational, civic, and social lives of Florida's

23  residents, and

24         WHEREAS, Barbara McKinzie of Chicago, Illinois, is the

25  Centennial International President of this great sisterhood

26  and leads the 250,000 women of this organization in the

27  current international program, "The SPIRIT of AKA," the

28  acronym and concept for Sisterhood, Service, Partnership,

29  Innovation, Respect, Involvement, and Technology, and

30         WHEREAS, Ella Springs Jones is the Centennial South

31  Atlantic Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads

 1  members of the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South

 2  Carolina, and

 3         WHEREAS, the largest chapter in Florida is Gamma Zeta

 4  Omega, located in Miami, and

 5         WHEREAS, Senator Frederica S. Wilson, a past South

 6  Atlantic Regional Director, and Senator Mandy Dawson are

 7  members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and

 8         WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in

 9  the State of Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours

10  implementing service programs in their respective communities,

11  NOW, THEREFORE,

12  

13  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

14  

15         That the members of the Florida Senate recognize the

16  commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to

17  community service and express special appreciation for their

18  service in the State of Florida.
