  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing University of South

  3         Florida Day, April 10, 2007, at the Florida

  4         Capitol.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, the University of South Florida is one of only

  7  three Florida public universities classified by the Carnegie

  8  Foundation in the Top Tier of Research Universities in America

  9  and has a $3.2 billion annual economic impact on the Tampa Bay

10  Region, and

11         WHEREAS, USF is the only Florida institution of higher

12  learning classified by the Carnegie Foundation for Community

13  Engagement in Outreach and Partnerships for its investments of

14  university resources in ways that mutually benefit the

15  university and the community through collaborative

16  interactions and related scholarship, and

17         WHEREAS, the Florida Technology Research and

18  Scholarship Board ranked USF's proposal first among all

19  applicants to create the Florida Center of Excellence for

20  Biomolecular Identification and Targeted Therapeutics,

21  awarding USF $8 million to produce a true community/business

22  partnership that will change how illness and disease are

23  detected and treated, and

24         WHEREAS, USF has more than 200,000 alumni living in all

25  50 states of the Union and 80,000 graduates living in the

26  Tampa Bay Area, where USF is at the hub of the community in

27  fields from the arts to social programs, from business to

28  health, and

29         WHEREAS, USF seeks out and finds opportunities to make

30  the Tampa Bay Area a safe and viable place to live, providing

31  more than $22 million annually in pro bono health care and

 1  offering to the community more than 600,000 volunteer hours by

 2  its students, faculty, and staff, and

 3         WHEREAS, the USF Bulls are members of the Big East

 4  Athletic Conference and the only Division 1-A team serving

 5  sports-loving Tampa Bay, enhancing the Bay Area's status as a

 6  center of Sports as Economic Development and sponsoring

 7  diverse nationally competitive programs that focus on the

 8  "student" in "student/athlete," and

 9         WHEREAS, a herd of Bulls have overtaken this Capitol

10  and it is Green and Gold as far as the eye can see, NOW,

11  THEREFORE,

13  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

14  

15         That the Senate welcomes representatives of the

16  University of South Florida to Tallahassee and recognizes

17  today, April 10, 2007, as "University of South Florida Day" at

18  the Capitol.
