  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to required information for

  3         9th-grade students; creating s. 1003.425, F.S.;

  4         requiring that 9th-grade students receive

  5         certain instruction relating to the value of a

  6         high school education and the available

  7         postsecondary options; providing an effective

  8         date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11  

12         Section 1.  Section 1003.425, Florida Statutes, is

13  created to read:

14         1003.425  Required information for 9th-grade

15  students.--Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, each

16  student who is in the second semester of the 9th grade in a

17  public school must have been given instruction in:

18         (1)  The value of a high school education, both

19  financial and cultural;

20         (2)  The alternative assessments, such as the SAT and

21  the ACT, the scores of which could help the student obtain a

22  high school diploma; and

23         (3)  The postsecondary options that are available,

24  including workforce training and enrolling in a community

25  college or a university, and the prerequisites to each, with

26  or without a diploma. The instruction must include a detailed

27  discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of

28  each alternative.

29         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

30  law.
