  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to nutrition and health

  3         services in elementary and secondary public

  4         schools; requiring nutritional standards for

  5         food that is available to school children on

  6         school campuses; requiring the State Board of

  7         Education to adopt rules; requiring school

  8         districts to provide medical screening for type

  9         II diabetes for certain students; providing an

10         effective date.

12  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13  

14         Section 1.  Regulation of food sold or prepared on

15  public school campuses; noninvasive medical screening.--

16         (1)  Each public elementary, middle, and high school in

17  this state shall post in a conspicuous place in its cafeteria

18  and on the school website the nutritional value of every meal

19  served in the cafeteria. Such posting must be accessible to a

20  parent of each student.

21         (2)  Each public middle school shall remove from its

22  campus vending machines that sell carbonated drinks and

23  replace such machines with vending machines that sell

24  vegetable juice, 100 percent fruit juice, and drinking water.

25         (3)  If a public elementary, middle, or high school

26  serves fried foods, such foods must be fried in oils that are

27  low in trans fatty acids in order to reduce the development of

28  health abnormalities in children.

29         (4)  Each school district shall provide for noninvasive

30  medical screening for type II diabetes for each student in

31  grade 9 who is at risk for type II diabetes. The State Board

 1  of Education, in consultation with the Department of Health,

 2  shall adopt rules by which each school district may determine

 3  which 9th graders in each school district are at risk for type

 4  II diabetes.

 5         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.
