| 5 | WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes was born on October 17, 1918, |
| 6 | in Palmetto, Florida, son of the late Jessie Sims Grimes and |
| 7 | Edward Glenn Grimes, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes graduated from Palmetto High |
| 9 | School in 1935 and received his undergraduate degree in Business |
| 10 | Administration from the University of Florida, an LLB degree |
| 11 | from the University of Florida College of Law in 1941, and a |
| 12 | Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University in |
| 13 | 1945, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, called to active duty in 1941, William Caleb |
| 15 | Grimes bravely served his country in the United States Army |
| 16 | during World War II, reaching the rank of Major, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, while completing his military service at Fort |
| 18 | Devens, Massachusetts, William Caleb Grimes met Janet Craig |
| 19 | Brouillette, whom he married in August of 1947, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, following his military service, William Caleb |
| 21 | Grimes joined his father's law practice and was a senior member |
| 22 | of Grimes Goebel Grimes Hawkins Gladfelter and Galvano, PL, |
| 23 | until his retirement in 2006, and |
| 24 | WHEREAS, in addition to his noted legal career, which |
| 25 | included service as attorney for the City of Palmetto, William |
| 26 | Caleb Grimes served two terms as a member of the Florida House |
| 27 | of Representatives from 1954 to 1958, during which he supported |
| 28 | such important legislation as the "Bulkhead Act," which ended |
| 29 | indiscriminate dredging and filling of bays and other waters, |
| 30 | the creation of the Florida Community College System, and the |
| 31 | creation and preservation of Coquina Beach and Leffis Key on |
| 32 | Anna Maria Island as public beaches, and |
| 33 | WHEREAS, during his lifetime, William Caleb Grimes was |
| 34 | active in civic, charitable, and professional organizations, |
| 35 | receiving numerous awards and honors, including Manatee County's |
| 36 | Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1974, and for his service |
| 37 | on the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar from 1974 to 1979 |
| 38 | and other legal work, was named among the Manatee County Bar |
| 39 | Association's Legends of the Bar in 2006, and |
| 40 | WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes was an active supporter of |
| 41 | the Palmetto Boys Club, volunteering as a youth baseball coach |
| 42 | for many years and serving as a director, and |
| 43 | WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes passed away on Tuesday, |
| 44 | February 13, 2007, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, |
| 45 | Janet; his son, Caleb; his daughter, Elizabeth; and six |
| 46 | grandchildren, and is mourned by a grateful community and state, |
| 47 | NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 49 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 50 | Florida: |

| 52 | That William Caleb Grimes is remembered and honored for his |
| 53 | many accomplishments and exemplary service to his community, |
| 54 | state, nation, family, and friends. |
| 55 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| 56 | forwarded to the family of William Caleb Grimes as a tangible |
| 57 | token of the sentiments expressed herein. |
