Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing Eugene C. Badger for his lifetime

3

accomplishments in agricultural leadership and service to

4

the residents of Florida.

5

6

     WHEREAS, Eugene C. Badger was born July 30, 1928, in rural

7

St. Johns County near Hastings and was raised sharing

8

responsibilities on his family's potato farm while attending St.

9

Johns County public schools, and

10

     WHEREAS, his leadership qualities emerged early when he

11

became an officer of the Hastings Chapter of Future Farmers of

12

America, and he showed FFA Grand Champion steers in the southeast

13

in 1944 and 1945, and

14

     WHEREAS, working summers as a migrant farm worker in four

15

states during the farm labor shortage during World War II, Mr.

16

Badger graduated from Hastings High School in 1946 and then

17

earned his B.S.A. degree in Agricultural Economics and Education

18

at the University of Florida in 1949, then working as a teacher

19

of vocational agriculture in Palatka, Florida, from 1949 to 1951,

20

and

21

     WHEREAS, Mr. Badger then entered military service and

22

graduated from the U.S. Marine Corps's Special Basic School in

23

1952, served in Japan and Korea, and received an Honorable

24

Discharge as Captain, and

25

     WHEREAS, in 1955 he married the former Irma McCollum and

26

their marriage produced four daughters, all of whom have gone on

27

to study at the University of Florida and all of whom have

28

attained postgraduate degrees in various fields, and

29

     WHEREAS, Mr. Badger's career has been marked by personal

30

success in the area of farm bureau insurance and by significant

31

service to farmers and the farm industry in Florida through

32

regional and statewide organizations, and

33

     WHEREAS, his many leadership roles include directing the

34

Putnam-St. Johns Farm Bureau and serving on its property rights

35

committee as it worked with Florida legislators; serving as

36

Director of the Florida Poultry Association; serving on

37

committees working to improve federal crop insurance for sweet

38

corn and other crops; and serving as State Executive Director of

39

the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, and

40

     WHEREAS, Eugene Badger also serves on the Everglades

41

Research Center Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the

42

Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame, and the Board of Directors of

43

Alpha Gamma Rho Educational Foundation, in addition to his

44

participation in numerous civic and professional associations,

45

NOW, THEREFORE,

46

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

48

49

     That the Florida Senate recognizes and honors the

50

accomplishments and service of Eugene C. Badger in the vital

51

fields of agriculture, agribusiness, and governmental relations

52

with Florida's farmers and farm industry.

53

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with

54

the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Eugene C. Badger

55

as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
