A resolution recognizing Coach Mike Martin of the Florida

3

State University Seminoles Baseball Team.

WHEREAS, Michael Martin was born in Charlotte, North

6

Carolina, on February 12, 1944, and

7

WHEREAS, Mike Martin began his career as a Florida State

8

Seminole as starting center fielder in 1965 and 1966, returned in

9

1975 as assistant coach, and was promoted to Head Baseball Coach

10

in 1979, and

11

WHEREAS, the Martin-coached Seminoles have won more baseball

12

games since 2000 than any other school in the NCAA, and

13

WHEREAS, Coach Martin has coached 70 players who earned All-

14

America honors, as well as 5 players who were named National

15

Players of the Year, and

16

WHEREAS, under Coach Martin, FSU has won 15 conference

17

championships, including 11 Metro Conference and 4 Atlantic Coast

18

Conference titles, and

19

WHEREAS, the FSU baseball team has appeared in the NCAA

20

tournament every year that Mike Martin has been head coach,

21

contributing to the streak of 30 consecutive NCAA tournament

22

appearances, and

23

WHEREAS, FSU has traveled to 12 College World Series under

24

Coach Martin, and

25

WHEREAS, he was honored with FSU's prestigious Westcott

26

Award for saving the lives of players and staff when, in 2001,

27

Coach Martin and then-assistant coach Chip Baker safely guided

28

the team's charter bus to the side of a busy San Francisco

29

highway after the driver suffered a fatal heart attack, and

30

WHEREAS, Mike Martin has been honored as Atlantic Coast

31

Conference Coach of the Year five times, in 1996, 1998, 1999,

32

2001, and 2007, and

33

WHEREAS, Coach Martin is only the fourth coach in the

34

history of NCAA baseball to achieve 1,500 victories, and

35

WHEREAS, Coach Martin is the third-winningest coach in

36

Division I NCAA baseball history, and

37

     WHEREAS, on January 5, 2007, Coach Mike Martin was inducted

38

into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, NOW,

39

THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

     That Florida State University Head Baseball Coach Mike

44

Martin is saluted and commended for his great character and

45

talent and the achievements that have resulted therefrom.

46

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with

47

the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Coach Mike Martin

48

as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
