Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing the Holocaust Days of

3

Remembrance, April 27 through May 4, 2008.

     WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic

6

persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany

7

and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945; Jews were the

8

primary victims (6 million were murdered), and Gypsies, the

9

handicapped, Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet

10

prisoners of war, and political dissidents were also subjected to

11

persecution and destruction under Nazi tyranny, and

12

     WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers us an

13

opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of

14

individuals, societies, and governments, and

15

     WHEREAS, the people of the State of Florida should always

16

remember the terrible events of the Holocaust, remain vigilant

17

against hatred, persecution, and tyranny, and work to establish

18

justice and fairness for all, and

19

     Whereas, the Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the

20

people of the State of Florida to remember the victims of the

21

Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all

22

peoples, and

     WHEREAS, the United States Congress established the Days of

24

Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration of the victims

25

of the Holocaust, and the United States Holocaust Memorial

26

Council designates the Days of Remembrance of the victims of the

27

Holocaust to be Sunday, April 27 through May 4, including the Day

28

of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, May 2, NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

     That the Senate recognizes the week of Sunday, April 27,

33

through Sunday, May 4, 2008, as "Days of Remembrance" in memory

34

of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the Survivors, as

35

well as the rescuers and liberators, and further recognizes that

36

all residents of the State of Florida should strive to overcome

37

intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance.
