| 8 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 9 |

| 10 | Section 1. Paragraph (s) is added to subsection (1) of |
| 11 | section 944.09, Florida Statutes, to read: |
| 12 | 944.09 Rules of the department; offenders, probationers, |
| 13 | and parolees.-- |
| 14 | (1) The department has authority to adopt rules pursuant |
| 15 | to ss. 120.536(1) and 120.54 to implement its statutory |
| 16 | authority. The rules must include rules relating to: |
| 17 | (s) Notice of the death of an inmate. The rules must |
| 18 | require the correctional facility in which an inmate died to |
| 19 | follow up the initial notice to the person designated by the |
| 20 | inmate to receive notice of his or her death by providing, in |
| 21 | writing, appropriate departmental contact information for any |
| 22 | department handling the inmate's death. |
| 23 | Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2008. |
