A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to license plates; amending s. 320.06,
3F.S.; requiring counties to issue license plates with
4either "Sunshine State" or the official state motto
5printed on the plate in lieu of the county name; providing
6conditions; providing an effective date.

8Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10     Section 1.  Paragraph (a) of subsection (3) of section
11320.06, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
12     320.06  Registration certificates, license plates, and
13validation stickers generally.--
14     (3)(a)  Registration license plates shall be of metal
15specially treated with a retroreflective material, as specified
16by the department. The registration license plate is designed to
17increase nighttime visibility and legibility and shall be at
18least 6 inches wide and not less than 12 inches in length,
19unless a plate with reduced dimensions is deemed necessary by
20the department to accommodate motorcycles, mopeds, or similar
21smaller vehicles. Validation stickers shall be treated with a
22retroreflective material, shall be of such size as specified by
23the department, and shall adhere to the license plate. The
24registration license plate shall be imprinted with a combination
25of bold letters and numerals or numerals, not to exceed seven
26digits, to identify the registration license plate number. The
27license plate shall also be imprinted with the word "Florida" at
28the top and the name of the county in which it is sold at the
29bottom, except that apportioned license plates shall have the
30word "Apportioned" at the bottom and license plates issued for
31vehicles taxed under s. 320.08(3)(d), (4)(m) or (n), (5)(b) or
32(c), or (14) shall have the word "Restricted" at the bottom.
33License plates issued for vehicles taxed under s. 320.08(12)
34must be imprinted with the word "Florida" at the top and the
35word "Dealer" at the bottom. Manufacturer license plates issued
36for vehicles taxed under s. 320.08(12) must be imprinted with
37the word "Florida" at the top and the word "Manufacturer" at the
38bottom. License plates issued for vehicles taxed under s.
39320.08(5)(d) or (e) must be imprinted with the word "Wrecker" at
40the bottom. Any county may, upon majority vote of the county
41commission, elect to have the county name removed from the
42license plates sold in that county. The words "Sunshine State"
43shall be printed in lieu thereof. In those counties where the
44county commission has not removed the county name from the
45license plate, the tax collector shall may, in addition to
46issuing license plates with the county name printed on the
47license plate, also issue license plates with either the
48official state motto or the words "Sunshine State" printed on
49the license plate subject to the approval of the department and
50a legislative appropriation for the additional license plates. A
51license plate issued for a vehicle taxed under s. 320.08(6) may
52not be assigned a registration license number, or be issued with
53any other distinctive character or designation, that
54distinguishes the motor vehicle as a for-hire motor vehicle.
55     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.
