| 5 | WHEREAS, forced to take their last stand on the Bataan |
| 6 | Peninsula and the island of Corregidor in the Philippines during |
| 7 | World War II, more than 80,000 joint Filipino-American forces |
| 8 | resisted the Japanese as effectively as circumstances would |
| 9 | allow and, for as long as humanly possible, delayed Japan's |
| 10 | advances throughout the Pacific, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, outgunned, ill-fed, half-sick, and worn thin, |
| 12 | these forces successfully fought the Japanese to a standstill |
| 13 | until Bataan fell on April 9, 1942, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, the battles at Bataan and Corregidor are credited |
| 15 | with having upset the 1941-1942 timetable of the Japanese |
| 16 | conquest of the Philippines by about four months, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, the prolonged defense of Bataan and Corregidor |
| 18 | saved Australia and contributed to the Americans' ultimate |
| 19 | victory, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, Bataan and Corregidor have been immortalized and |
| 21 | recognized as bastions of democracy, earning respect and |
| 22 | admiration for Americans and Filipinos worldwide, NOW, |
| 23 | THEREFORE, |

| 29 | Friendship Day" in Florida. |
