| 3 | Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has made to the people |
| 4 | of Florida, and recognizing April 13-15, 2008, as "The |
| 5 | 14th Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol." |

| 7 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a public |
| 8 | service organization that was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 |
| 9 | outstanding women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and |
| 10 | WHEREAS, nearly 6 weeks after its founding, the first |
| 11 | public act of the sorority was its participation in the Women's |
| 12 | Suffrage Movement demanding rights for women, particularly the |
| 13 | right to vote, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a sisterhood |
| 15 | of college-educated women committed to implementing the |
| 16 | sorority's mission through its Five Point Program Thrust: |
| 17 | Economic Development, Educational Development, Physical and |
| 18 | Mental Health, Political Awareness, and International Awareness |
| 19 | and Involvement, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., recently |
| 21 | celebrated 95 years of exemplary service and support to local |
| 22 | communities, leading dialogue on public policy issues, |
| 23 | supporting quality education, and producing new projects to |
| 24 | stimulate current and future economic growth, and |
| 25 | WHEREAS, with more than 200,000 college-educated women and |
| 26 | over 950 chapters worldwide, 47 of which are located in Florida |
| 27 | and the Bahamas, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are |
| 28 | clearly focused and visible as corporate and civic leaders, |
| 29 | productive public officials, acclaimed academicians, and |
| 30 | activists in their own right, and |
| 31 | WHEREAS, for the past 13 years, the sorority's Florida |
| 32 | chapters have conducted "Delta Days at the Florida Capitol" to |
| 33 | provide information to state legislators and government |
| 34 | executives which is vital to developing public policy; to host a |
| 35 | reception for state legislators and government executives; and |
| 36 | to monitor the progress of pending legislation related to |
| 37 | significant public policy issues, and |
| 38 | WHEREAS, on April 13-15, 2008, the members of the 47 |
| 39 | chapters of the sorority that now serve Florida and the Bahamas |
| 40 | will converge on Tallahassee to conduct The 14th Annual Delta |
| 41 | Days at the Florida Capitol, with the theme "Remember the 22 - |
| 42 | Social Action is What We Do!", and |
| 43 | WHEREAS, Senators Larcenia J. Bullard and Arthenia Joyner, |
| 44 | and Representatives Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Joyce Cusack, |
| 45 | and Audrey Gibson are esteemed members of Delta Sigma Theta |
| 46 | Sorority, Inc., NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 48 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 49 | Florida: |

| 51 | That the Florida House of Representatives commends Delta |
| 52 | Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its contributions to the people |
| 53 | of Florida, and recognizes April 13-15, 2008, as "The 14th |
| 54 | Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol." |
