| 7 | WHEREAS, Senator Helen Gordon Davis served the people of |
| 8 | Florida as a State Representative from 1974 to 1988 and as a |
| 9 | State Senator from 1988 to 1992, and |
| 10 | WHEREAS, Senator Davis worked tirelessly to promote the |
| 11 | well-being of women and children and has been honored for her |
| 12 | work by many groups, a few of which include the Florida Women's |
| 13 | Consortium, American Business Women, the National Organization |
| 14 | for Women, the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, and |
| 15 | the American Association of University Women, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, Senator Davis recognized a need for widows and |
| 17 | divorcees who had been homemakers during most of their adult |
| 18 | lives to have peer counseling, job training, and support groups |
| 19 | to help them enter the job market, so she established the first |
| 20 | displaced homemaker program at the Centre for Women in Tampa, |
| 21 | and |
| 22 | WHEREAS, following the success of the program in Tampa, |
| 23 | Senator Davis sponsored legislation to provide displaced |
| 24 | homemaker centers throughout the state, and |
| 25 | WHEREAS, in 1988, Senator Davis sponsored legislation to |
| 26 | establish the Displaced Homemaker Trust Fund from marriage |
| 27 | license fees and divorce filing fees, which trust fund continues |
| 28 | in existence to this day, and |
| 29 | WHEREAS, the Florida House of Representatives would like to |
| 30 | honor Senator Helen Gordon Davis for her vision and pioneering |
| 31 | efforts on behalf of Florida's displaced homemakers, NOW, |
| 32 | THEREFORE, |

| 34 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 35 | Florida: |

| 37 | That the House of Representatives designates April 10, |
| 38 | 2008, as "Senator Helen Gordon Davis Appreciation Day" in |
| 39 | Florida and commends Senator Davis for her distinguished service |
| 40 | to Florida's displaced homemakers. |
| 41 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| 42 | presented to Senator Helen Gordon Davis as a tangible token of |
| 43 | the sentiments expressed herein. |
