| 2 | A memorial to the Congress of the United States, urging |
| 3 | Congress to extend the freeze on increases in the size or |
| 4 | weight of commercial motor vehicles. |

| 6 | WHEREAS, the State of Florida is committed to protecting |
| 7 | the safety of motorists on its highways and to protecting |
| 8 | taxpayers' investment in our highway infrastructure, and |
| 9 | WHEREAS, there are proposals to remove the federal freeze |
| 10 | on the size or weight of commercial motor vehicles, including |
| 11 | triple-trailer trucks, in legislation reauthorizing funding for |
| 12 | federal transportation, which will be considered in the United |
| 13 | States Congress in 2009, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, federal and state studies have found that |
| 15 | increasing the size and weight of commercial motor vehicles may |
| 16 | accelerate the deterioration of bridges, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Administration has classified |
| 18 | 1,994 bridges in Florida as structurally deficient or |
| 19 | functionally obsolete, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 21 | Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 22 |
|
| 23 | That the Congress of the United States is requested to |
| 24 | extend the freeze on increases in the size and weight of |
| 25 | commercial motor vehicles on the roads and highways of this |
| 26 | country. |
| 27 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be |
| 28 | dispatched to the President of the United States, to the |
| 29 | President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the |
| 30 | United States House of Representatives, and to each member of |
| 31 | the Florida delegation to the United States Congress. |
