    1                           Senate Memorial                         
    2         A memorial to the Congress of the United States,
    3         urging Congress to extend the freeze on increases in
    4         the size and weight of commercial motor vehicles.
    5  
    6         WHEREAS, the State of Florida is committed to protecting
    7  the safety of motorists on its highways and to protecting
    8  taxpayers’ investment in our highway infrastructure, and
    9         WHEREAS, the United States Congress will be considering the
   10  reauthorization of the multibillion-dollar transportation
   11  funding bill in 2009 and attempts to challenge the current
   12  federal truck size and weight limits are expected, and
   13         WHEREAS, federal and state studies have found that
   14  increasing the size and weight of commercial motor vehicles may
   15  accelerate the deterioration of bridges, and
   16         WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Administration has classified
   17  1,994 bridges in Florida as structurally deficient or
   18  functionally obsolete, NOW, THEREFORE,

   20  Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   21         
   22         That the Congress of the United States is requested to
   23  extend the freeze on increases in the size and weight of
   24  commercial motor vehicles on the roads and highways of this
   25  country.
   26         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
   27  dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
   28  President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
   29  United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
   30  the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
