    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to district school board duties;
    3         providing a short title; amending s. 1006.07, F.S.;
    4         requiring that, beginning with the 2009-2010 school
    5         year, each school district provide access to suicide
    6         prevention education for all instructional and
    7         administrative staff using resources approved by the
    8         Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention; providing an
    9         effective date.

   11  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   12  
   13         Section 1. This act may be cited as the “Protect Florida's
   14  Youth Act.”
   15         Section 2. Subsection (7) is added to section 1006.07,
   16  Florida Statutes, to read:
   17         1006.07 District school board duties relating to student
   18  discipline and school safety.—The district school board shall
   19  provide for the proper accounting for all students, for the
   20  attendance and control of students at school, and for proper
   21  attention to health, safety, and other matters relating to the
   22  welfare of students, including:
   23         (7) SUICIDE PREVENTION EDUCATION.—Beginning with the 2009
   24  2010 school year, each district shall provide access to suicide
   25  prevention education for all instructional and administrative
   26  staff using resources approved by the Statewide Office of
   27  Suicide Prevention. This education may be accomplished through a
   28  review by district staff of suitable education materials
   29  relating to youth suicide prevention, bullying prevention, and
   30  mental health.
   31         Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
