| 2 | A resolution recognizing the week of June 21-27, 2009, as |
| 3 | "Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida. |

| 5 | WHEREAS, as of 2006 there were 48 humane societies in this |
| 6 | state serving 43 counties in the struggle with domestic animal |
| 7 | overpopulation, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, humane societies work to promote animal adoption |
| 9 | and education, eliminate animal overpopulation, prevent animal |
| 10 | cruelty, and relieve animal suffering, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served many |
| 12 | communities in this state for as long as 45 years, and |
| 13 | WHEREAS, in 2007 approximately 590,000 dogs and cats were |
| 14 | received into municipal and privately funded shelters, and |
| 15 | approximately 108,000 of those animals were euthanized, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, in 2008 humane societies served to locate |
| 17 | permanent homes for many thousands of otherwise unwanted animals |
| 18 | and promoted regional spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and |
| 19 | responsible measure for controlling the animal overpopulation in |
| 20 | this state, and |
| 21 | WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by residents of this |
| 22 | state who unselfishly volunteer their time, energy, and |
| 23 | expertise, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 25 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 26 | Florida: |
| 27 |
|
| 28 | That the humane societies across this state are commended |
| 29 | for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and |
| 30 | animals of Florida and that the week of June 21-27, 2009, is |
| 31 | recognized as "Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida. |
