1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing Phillis Oeters for her
3 leadership and service to the community in Miami-Dade
4 County.

6 WHEREAS, Phillis Oeters came to Florida for the first time
7 intending to sail and scuba dive before returning to her native
8 Virginia, and
9 WHEREAS, upon her return to Virginia, Phillis Oeters
10 discovered that she had “sand in her shoes,” and ultimately, in
11 1981, made Miami-Dade County her home, and
12 WHEREAS, Phillis Oeters has continued to live out her
13 commitment to community service, which began when she served as
14 a “Big Sister” in college, volunteering with numerous service
15 organizations and working as a social worker, and
16 WHEREAS, Phillis Oeters was recruited by Baptist Healthcare
17 to help build its community relations department, and
18 WHEREAS, with the dynamic leadership of Phillis Oeters and
19 her tireless advocacy for making quality, affordable health care
20 available to all Floridians, Baptist Healthcare has grown to one
21 of the area’s largest employers, with more than 13,000
22 employees, and
23 WHEREAS, Phillis Oeters serves on numerous boards,
24 including the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the Beacon
25 Council, the American Red Cross, United Way, and the Nat Moore
26 Foundation, and
27 WHEREAS, in 2009, Phillis Oeters became only the second
28 woman in the 76-year history of the Orange Bowl to serve as
29 chair of the Orange Bowl Committee and, in that capacity, led a
30 $100 million economic development initiative, and
31 WHEREAS, Phillis Oeters is equally committed to her role as
32 mother to her daughter, Raquel, NOW, THEREFORE,

34 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

36 That Phillis Oeters is recognized for her outstanding
37 commitment to community service and economic development in
38 Miami-Dade County and for her service as chair of the 2009
39 Orange Bowl Committee.
40 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
41 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Phillis Oeters
42 as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
