    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing April 2011 as “Adopt a
    3         Shelter Pet Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, in the United States, six to eight million
    6  homeless pets enter animal shelters each year, with as many as
    7  four million of these animals being euthanized, including
    8  healthy, loving cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies, and
    9         WHEREAS, the faltering economy has forced many pet owners
   10  to surrender their beloved pets to local animal shelters, which
   11  are already overburdened, and
   12         WHEREAS, Florida communities are experiencing unprecedented
   13  budget shortfalls, which is placing an increased strain on local
   14  animal shelters, threatening the lives of thousands of animals,
   15  and
   16         WHEREAS, Florida animal shelters cannot save and support
   17  the large numbers of animals arriving at their doors, and
   18         WHEREAS, adopting a pet from a local animal shelter is one
   19  way that Floridians can make a difference in these uncertain
   20  economic times, giving hope to those who must surrender their
   21  pet that the pet will be loved and cared for, and
   22         WHEREAS, adopting a pet from a local animal shelter deeply
   23  enriches the lives of those who open their homes and hearts to
   24  shelter animals, NOW, THEREFORE,

   26  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   27  
   28         That April 2011 is recognized as “Adopt a Shelter Pet
   29  Month” in Florida.
