    2         A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
    3         Inc.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
    6  Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
    7         WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
    8  sorority established by African American college women, and
    9         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is an
   10  international organization that has over 260,000 members in more
   11  than 900 chapters in the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda,
   12  Great Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands, and
   13         WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in communities
   14  and on college and university campuses in Florida, and
   15         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
   16  community service and has made numerous contributions to the
   17  educational, civic, and social lives of Floridians, and
   18         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., continues its
   19  support of the international program, “Empowering our
   20  Communities with Global Leadership through Timeless Service,”
   21  and
   22         WHEREAS, bound by its humanitarianism and credo of service
   23  that extends to all mankind, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
   24  is playing a role in the relief efforts for the citizens of
   25  Haiti in the wake of the recent catastrophic earthquake, and
   26         WHEREAS, Marsha Lewis-Brown is the Centennial South
   27  Atlantic Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads
   28  members of the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,
   29  and
   30         WHEREAS, Representative Mia Jones and Representative
   31  Geraldine Thompson are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
   32  Inc., and
   33         WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
   34  in Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours implementing
   35  service programs in their respective communities, NOW,
   36  THEREFORE,

   38  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   39  
   40         That the members of the Florida Senate recognize the
   41  commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to
   42  worldwide service and express special appreciation for their
   43  service in Florida.
