| 7 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a public | 
| 8 | service organization founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 | 
| 9 | outstanding women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and | 
| 10 | WHEREAS, nearly 6 weeks after its founding, the first | 
| 11 | public act of the sorority was its participation in the Women's | 
| 12 | Suffrage Movement, demanding rights for women, particularly the | 
| 13 | right to vote, and | 
| 14 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a sisterhood | 
| 15 | of college-educated women committed to implementing the | 
| 16 | sorority's mission through its Five-Point Program Thrust: | 
| 17 | economic development, educational development, physical and | 
| 18 | mental health, political awareness and involvement, and | 
| 19 | international awareness and involvement, and | 
| 20 | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., recently | 
| 21 | celebrated 98 years of exemplary service and support to local | 
| 22 | communities, leading dialogue on public policy issues, | 
| 23 | supporting quality education, producing new projects to | 
| 24 | stimulate current and future economic growth, and improving the | 
| 25 | holistic well-being of minority populations internationally, and | 
| 26 | WHEREAS, with more than 200,000 college-educated women and | 
| 27 | more than 950 chapters worldwide, 52 of which are located in | 
| 28 | Florida and the Bahamas, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority | 
| 29 | are clearly focused and visible as corporate and civic leaders, | 
| 30 | productive public officials, acclaimed academicians, and | 
| 31 | activists in their own right, and | 
| 32 | WHEREAS, for the past 16 years, the sorority's Florida | 
| 33 | chapters have conducted "Delta Days at the Florida Capitol" to | 
| 34 | provide information to state legislators and government | 
| 35 | executives which is vital to developing public policy; to host a | 
| 36 | reception for state legislators and government executives; and | 
| 37 | to monitor the progress of pending legislation related to | 
| 38 | significant public policy issues, and | 
| 39 | WHEREAS, on March 20-23, 2011, under the leadership of Lois | 
| 40 | Gilder, Interim Southern Regional Director, the members of the | 
| 41 | 52 chapters of the sorority that now serve Florida and the | 
| 42 | Bahamas will converge on Tallahassee to conduct the 17th Annual | 
| 43 | Delta Days at the Florida Capitol and to provide special | 
| 44 | recognition at the Fifth Annual Honorable Carrie P. Meek Servant | 
| 45 | Leadership Luncheon to the state's Delta Dears, who have blazed | 
| 46 | trails in social advocacy and public service, and | 
| 47 | WHEREAS, Senators Arthenia L. Joyner and Larcenia J. | 
| 48 | Bullard and Representative Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed are esteemed | 
| 49 | members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NOW, THEREFORE, | 
| 50 |

| 51 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of | 
| 52 | Florida: |

| 54 | That the Florida House of Representatives commends Delta | 
| 55 | Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its contributions to the people | 
| 56 | of Florida, and recognizes March 20-23, 2011, as "The 17th |
