| 5 | WHEREAS, in 1984, two registered professional nurses |
| 6 | practicing in Miami, Alice Casimir and Jacqueline Dasque, saw |
| 7 | the need to establish an organization that would provide health |
| 8 | care services to migrant workers in the Homestead area and, |
| 9 | along with other professionals, founded the Haitian American |
| 10 | Nurses Association of Florida, Inc., and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, this nonprofit membership organization was |
| 12 | established in order to provide Haitian nurses with the |
| 13 | opportunity to unite as a group, to share and provide ideas of |
| 14 | interest to the profession of nursing, and to become effectively |
| 15 | involved with the issues and services relevant to the health and |
| 16 | welfare of Florida's Haitian community, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, the Haitian American Nurses Association of |
| 18 | Florida, Inc., strives to increase the enrollment of Haitian |
| 19 | students in nursing schools in both Florida and Haiti through |
| 20 | scholarships, educational and mentoring opportunities, and |
| 21 | facilitation of community networking among its members, and |
| 22 | WHEREAS, in collaboration with other community |
| 23 | organizations, the association provides culturally sensitive |
| 24 | care while promoting health and wellness by offering annual |
| 25 | preventive health screenings and providing education regarding |
| 26 | high blood pressure, diabetic management, immunization, |
| 27 | HIV/AIDS, obesity, various cancers, heart disease, aging, and |
| 28 | other health concerns, and |
| 29 | WHEREAS, in its commitment to reshaping the health care |
| 30 | delivery system for citizens of Florida and of Haiti, the |
| 31 | Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida, Inc., has |
| 32 | partnered with many organizations throughout the state and |
| 33 | nation, including Miami Dade College, the Miami-Dade County |
| 34 | Health Department, the Florida Heart Research Institute, the |
| 35 | Florida Nurses Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of |
| 36 | Florida, the Haitian American Professionals Coalition, the |
| 37 | American Diabetes Association, and the American Cancer Society, |
| 38 | among others, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 43 | That the Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida, |
| 44 | Inc., is honored for its commitment to health care and education |
| 45 | both within the Haitian community and throughout the state and |
| 46 | is commended for its invaluable contributions to public health |
| 47 | and well-being. |
