2A resolution recognizing May 2011 as "Power to End Stroke
3Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the
6United States, striking over 700,000 Americans each year and
7killing more than 133,750, including 8,524 Floridians, and
8     WHEREAS, stroke is also a leading cause of serious long-
9term disability in the United States, with more than 1.1 million
10adults experiencing functional limitations or difficulty with
11activities of daily living resulting from stroke, and
12     WHEREAS, on the average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds
13in the United States and takes a life every 4 minutes, and
14     WHEREAS, the estimated direct and indirect costs of stroke
15in the United States this year will be more than $73.7 billion,
16and
17     WHEREAS, many Americans are unaware of their risk factors
18for a stroke and are unaware of the signs and symptoms of an
19impending stroke, and
20     WHEREAS, statistics show that African Americans have almost
21twice the risk of a first stroke compared to Caucasians, in part
22because of their increased risk of high blood pressure and
23diabetes, NOW, THEREFORE,

25Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
26Florida:
27
28     That May 2011 is recognized as "Power to End Stroke Month"
29in Florida and that all residents of this state are urged to
30recognize that stroke must be taken seriously in order to reduce
31its risks.
32     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Floridians are urged to
33become familiar with the warning signs, symptoms, and risk
34factors associated with stroke and live stronger, healthier
35lives.
