1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing Elsie Marie Calvert Thompson,
3 the oldest living American.

5 WHEREAS, Elsie Marie Calvert was born on April 5, 1899, in
6 Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and
7 WHEREAS, in 1921, Elsie Marie Calvert married Ronald “Ron”
8 L. Thompson, an Army Veteran of World War I and World War II,
9 who went on to serve in the Pennsylvania House of
10 Representatives for 22 years, and
11 WHEREAS, during World War II, Elsie Marie Calvert Thompson
12 successfully ran her husband’s gold refinery business, but she
13 most enjoyed her role as a devoted wife and mother, and
14 WHEREAS, in 1971, Elsie and Ron retired to Clearwater,
15 where they purchased a condominium just off U.S. 19, where Elsie
16 still resides, and
17 WHEREAS, until she turned 102 years old, Elsie made an
18 annual trip to California to visit her now 72-year-old son,
19 George, and his children and grandchildren, but he now visits
20 her in the Sunshine State, and
21 WHEREAS, on January 2, 2013, Elsie Marie Calvert Thompson
22 became the oldest living American and, on January 12, 2013,
23 became the fifth-oldest living person in the world, and
24 WHEREAS, on January 13, 2013, Elsie Marie Calvert Thompson
25 entered the list of the 100 oldest women of all time, and
26 WHEREAS, when asked her secret to living a long life, Elsie
27 Marie Calvert Thompson replied, “I love people,” NOW, THEREFORE,

29 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

31 That we recognize one of Clearwater’s greatest treasures,
32 Elsie Marie Calvert Thompson, the oldest living American.
