    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution encouraging the observance of National
    3         Spirit of '45 Day in the state on August 11, 2013.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, on August 14, 1945, the people of the United
    6  States received word of the end of World War II and greeted the
    7  news of the Allies’ noble victory with joyous celebration,
    8  humility, and spiritual reflection, and
    9         WHEREAS, the victory marked the culmination of an
   10  unprecedented national effort that defeated the forces of
   11  aggression, brought freedom to subjugated nations, and ended the
   12  horrors of the Holocaust, and
   13         WHEREAS, these historic accomplishments were achieved
   14  through the collective service and personal sacrifice of the
   15  people of the United States, both those who served in uniform
   16  and those who supported them on the home front, and the more
   17  than 400,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to their
   18  country during World War II, and
   19         WHEREAS, August 14, 1945, marked not only the end of the
   20  war but also the beginning of an unparalleled era of rebuilding
   21  led by the United States to restore the societies of both its
   22  allies and former foes alike and the formation of an array of
   23  organizations and institutions that helped to strengthen
   24  American democracy by promoting civic engagement, volunteerism,
   25  and service to community and country, and
   26         WHEREAS, the courage, dedication, self-sacrifice, and
   27  compassion of the “ordinary heroes” of the World War II
   28  generation continue to inspire our nation, especially the men
   29  and women of the United States Armed Forces who are currently
   30  serving around the world protecting our country, and
   31         WHEREAS, the entire World War II generation, military and
   32  civilian alike, has provided a model of national unity and
   33  community that will continue to serve as a source of inspiration
   34  for current and future generations of Americans to come together
   35  to work for the continued prosperity of the Unites States and
   36  the world, and
   37         WHEREAS, National Spirit of '45 Day is observed each year
   38  on the second Sunday in August to commemorate the anniversary of
   39  the end of World War II on August 14, 1945, NOW, THEREFORE,

   41  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   42  
   43         That the Senate of the State of Florida encourages the
   44  observance of National Spirit of '45 Day in Florida on August
   45  11, 2013.
   46         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
   47  presented to the Florida Spirit of '45 Committee as a tangible
   48  token of the sentiments expressed herein.
