    1                           Senate Memorial                         
    2         A memorial to the Congress of the United States,
    3         urging Congress to recommend that X-linked
    4         Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) be included in the
    5         Recommended Uniform Screening Panel for state newborn
    6         screening programs by the United States Department of
    7         Health and Human Services.
    8  
    9         WHEREAS, Adrenoleukodystrophy is a type of hereditary
   10  condition that causes damage to the membrane surrounding nerve
   11  cells in the brain, and
   12         WHEREAS, screening of newborns can identify the presence of
   13  this disease of the central nervous system, which is inherited
   14  as an X-linked recessive trait and is characterized by
   15  blindness, deafness, tonic spasms, and mental deterioration,
   16  NOW, THEREFORE,

   18  Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   19  
   20         That the Congress of the United States is urged to
   21  recommend that X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) be included
   22  in the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel for state newborn
   23  screening programs by the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on
   24  Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children of the United
   25  States Department of Health and Human Services.
   26         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
   27  dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
   28  President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
   29  United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
   30  the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
