    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing February 2016 as "National
    3         Spine Ability Month" in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, spinal impairment is the leading cause of
    6  disability in the United States, affecting 14 million people
    7  nationwide, and
    8         WHEREAS, the total costs associated with spine-related
    9  impairment in the United States are estimated at $253 billion, a
   10  91 percent increase during the past decade, and
   11         WHEREAS, over the past 20 years, the cost of spine-related
   12  impairment and associated musculoskeletal disorders has
   13  increased at nearly four times the growth rate of the nation’s
   14  gross domestic product, and
   15         WHEREAS, 66 percent of the total costs associated with
   16  spine-related impairment in the United States is attributed to
   17  productivity loss and absenteeism, accounting for annual
   18  employer losses of $28 billion, and
   19         WHEREAS, back pain was the cause of 671 million bed days
   20  and 385 million lost work days in 2008, and spinal impairment is
   21  now the leading cause of disability in veterans of the United
   22  States Armed Forces, and
   23         WHEREAS, millions of children suffer from spinal
   24  deformities and conditions that reduce their quality of life and
   25  longevity, with 94 percent of children with spine-related
   26  impairment reporting some level of associated disability, and
   27         WHEREAS, the North American Spine Foundation promotes the
   28  virtues and benefits of an integrative and collaborative system
   29  of care, including diagnostic, surgical, nonsurgical,
   30  perioperative, occupational, psychosocial, cognitive-behavioral,
   31  and preventive measures to achieve an efficient restoration of
   32  function and a mitigation of the risk for developing disability,
   33  and
   34         WHEREAS, the North American Spine Foundation has
   35  established the Spine 10 x 25 Initiative with the stated goal of
   36  achieving a 10 percent reduction in spine-related disability in
   37  the United States by the year 2025, and
   38         WHEREAS, it is important that awareness of the impact of
   39  spinal impairment and support for the Spine 10 x 25 Initiative
   40  be raised in this state, NOW, THEREFORE,

   42  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   43  
   44         That February 2016 is recognized as "National Spine Ability
   45  Month" in Florida.
