    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to advisory councils of the Department
    3         of Veterans’ Affairs; amending s. 265.003, F.S.;
    4         defining the term “veteran” and “military veteran” for
    5         purposes of determining persons the Florida Veterans’
    6         Hall of Fame Council may consider as nominees for the
    7         Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame; providing an effective
    8         date.

   10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   11  
   12         Section 1. Subsection (4) of section 265.003, Florida
   13  Statutes, is amended to read:
   14         265.003 Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame.—
   15         (4)(a) The Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame Council shall
   16  annually accept nominations of persons to be considered for
   17  induction into the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame and shall
   18  transmit a list of up to 20 nominees to the Department of
   19  Veterans’ Affairs for submission to the Governor and the Cabinet
   20  who will select the nominees to be inducted.
   21         (b) In selecting its nominees for submission to the
   22  Governor and the Cabinet, the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame
   23  council shall give preference to veterans who were born in
   24  Florida or adopted Florida as their home state or base of
   25  operation and who have made a significant contribution to the
   26  state in civic, business, public service, or other pursuits.
   27         (c) For purposes of this section, the term “veteran” or
   28  “military veteran” means a person who meets the definition of
   29  the term in s. 1.01(14) or a former member of the Florida
   30  National Guard.
   31         Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
