    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to education; amending s. 1001.10,
    3         F.S.; authorizing the Commissioner of Education to
    4         coordinate with specified educational entities to
    5         assess needs for resources and assistance in the event
    6         of an emergency situation; providing an effective
    7         date.

    9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   10  
   11         Section 1. Subsection (8) is added to section 1001.10,
   12  Florida Statutes, to read:
   13         1001.10 Commissioner of Education; general powers and
   14  duties.—
   15         (8) In the event of an emergency situation, the
   16  commissioner may coordinate through the most appropriate means
   17  of communication with local school districts, Florida College
   18  System institutions, and satellite offices of the Division of
   19  Blind Services and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to
   20  assess the need for resources and assistance to enable each
   21  school, institution, or satellite office the ability to reopen
   22  as soon as possible after considering the health, safety, and
   23  welfare of students and clients.
   24         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2018.
