    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution designating February 24-28, 2020, as
    3         Public Schools Week.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, public education is the foundation of a 21st
    6  century democracy, and
    7         WHEREAS, this state’s public schools are where students
    8  come to be educated as citizens of the United States, and
    9         WHEREAS, each public school prepares this state’s young
   10  people to contribute to society, the economy, and the citizenry
   11  of this country, and
   12         WHEREAS, 90 percent of this state’s children attend public
   13  schools, and
   14         WHEREAS, local officials and state lawmakers support
   15  strengthening the public schools of this state and work to
   16  empower local education leaders to manage and lead school
   17  districts in partnership with educators, parents, and other
   18  local stakeholders and learning communities, and
   19         WHEREAS, local officials and state lawmakers support
   20  counseling, extracurricular activities, and mental health
   21  services that are critical to helping students learn, and
   22         WHEREAS, safe, high-quality public schools are where
   23  children learn to think critically, develop problem-solving
   24  skills, and build relationships, and
   25         WHEREAS, public schools should provide an environment where
   26  all students can succeed, beginning in their earliest years,
   27  regardless of who they are or where they live, and
   28         WHEREAS, efforts should be supported to advance equity and
   29  excellence in public education and to implement continuous
   30  improvement and evidence-based practices, and
   31         WHEREAS, all children have a right to an education that
   32  helps them reach their full potential and to attend schools that
   33  offer a high-quality educational experience, and
   34         WHEREAS, students, teachers, and professionals make this
   35  state’s public schools vital components of the community, and
   36         WHEREAS, parents and communities are working hard to
   37  improve educational outcomes for children across the country,
   38  and
   39         WHEREAS, the week of February 24-28, 2020, would be an
   40  appropriate period to designate as Public Schools Week, NOW,
   41  THEREFORE,

   43  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

   45         That the members of the Senate support the designation of
   46  February 24-28, 2020, as Public Schools Week.
