A resolution recognizing March 2021 as “Kidney Disease

WHEREAS, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the progressive,
gradual loss of kidney function which results in a decrease in
the ability of the kidneys to remove waste from the body, and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 37 million adults in the
United States have CKD, and of those, approximately 90 percent
 remain undiagnosed, and
WHEREAS, without diagnosis and treatment to slow its
progression, CKD can progress to end-stage renal failure, which
is fatal unless the patient receives dialysis or a kidney
 transplant, and
WHEREAS, CKD is associated with more severe COVID-19
infections, and COVID-19 may cause acute kidney damage that can
lead to dialysis or even death, and
WHEREAS, regular screening and early detection can prevent
the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure, and it is
essential that awareness of kidney disease and the importance of
prevention and early detection be raised, and
WHEREAS, kidney disease awareness empowers patients and
