1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing the 117th anniversary of
3 Rotary International.

5 WHEREAS, for 117 years, Rotary International, a worldwide
6 nonpolitical, nonreligious organization with a membership of
7 more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community
8 leaders, has provided humanitarian service, encouraged high
9 ethical standards in all vocations, and helped to build goodwill
10 and peace in the world, and
11 WHEREAS, the main objective of Rotary International is
12 captured in the organization’s motto, “Service Above Self,” and
13 is expressed through the work of more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs
14 in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the
15 world as they provide service to their communities, workplaces,
16 and the wider world, and
17 WHEREAS, Rotary International is an outgrowth of the Rotary
18 Club of Chicago, founded by local attorney Paul Harris on
19 February 23, 1905, and
20 WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation, supported solely by
21 voluntary contributions, is a nonprofit corporation that
22 supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world
23 understanding and peace through international humanitarian,
24 educational, and cultural exchange programs, and
25 WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation began as an endowment fund
26 in 1917 at the suggestion of Rotary International’s sixth
27 president, Arch C. Klumph, to allow Rotary members “to do good
28 in the world,” and has grown from the first donation of $26.50
29 by the Rotary Club of Kansas City to a fund of more than $1
30 billion, and
31 WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation has one of the largest and
32 most prestigious international fellowship programs in the world,
33 and
34 WHEREAS, Rotarians across Florida continue to strive for
35 “service above self,” NOW, THEREFORE,

39 That the 117th anniversary of Rotary International is
40 recognized.
