    1                           Senate Memorial                         
    2         A memorial to the United States Department of
    3         Agriculture, requesting the department to perform a
    4         study on the foods typically purchased by users of the
    5         Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
    6  
    7         WHEREAS, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
    8  (SNAP) offers nutrition assistance to eligible low-income
    9  individuals and families in the form of funds to purchase
   10  eligible food, and
   11         WHEREAS, the Food and Nutrition Service under the United
   12  States Department of Agriculture (USDA) administers SNAP, and
   13  the Florida Department of Children and Families distributes the
   14  benefits, and
   15         WHEREAS, SNAP benefits may be used to purchase any food
   16  product intended for human consumption, but may not be used to
   17  purchase alcoholic beverages, tobacco, hot foods, and hot food
   18  products prepared for immediate consumption, and
   19         WHEREAS, the last study administered by the USDA to
   20  identify foods typically purchased by SNAP households was
   21  conducted using point-of-sale data from 2011, information that
   22  is over a decade old, and
   23         WHEREAS, relevant and recent data is needed to identify the
   24  foods typically purchased by SNAP households, NOW, THEREFORE,
   25  
   26  Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   27  
   28         That the United States Department of Agriculture is
   29  requested to perform a study on the foods typically purchased by
   30  users of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
   31         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State dispatch
   32  copies of this memorial to the Secretary of the United States
   33  Department of Agriculture, the President of the United States,
   34  the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the
   35  United States House of Representatives, and each member of the
   36  Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
