    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing the week of May 5, 2024, as
    3         “Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week” in Florida and
    4         encouraging those experiencing uncontrollable,
    5         abnormal, and repetitive movements to consult their
    6         health care provider regarding their symptoms.
    7  
    8         WHEREAS, many people living with a serious mental illness,
    9  such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder,
   10  schizophrenia, or schizoaffective disorder, or with a
   11  gastrointestinal disorder like gastroparesis or symptoms like
   12  nausea and vomiting, may be treated with medications that work
   13  as dopamine receptor blocking agents, including antipsychotics
   14  and antiemetics, and
   15         WHEREAS, while ongoing treatment with these medications can
   16  be necessary, prolonged use is associated with tardive
   17  dyskinesia (TD), and
   18         WHEREAS, TD is an involuntary movement disorder
   19  characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive
   20  movements of the face, torso, limbs, and fingers or toes, and
   21         WHEREAS, even mild symptoms of TD can impact people
   22  physically, socially, and emotionally, and
   23         WHEREAS, it is estimated that TD affects approximately
   24  600,000 people in the United States, and approximately 65
   25  percent of people with TD have not been diagnosed, making it
   26  important to raise awareness about the symptoms, and
   27         WHEREAS, it is important that people taking these
   28  medications be monitored for TD by a health care provider, with
   29  regular screening for TD recommended by the American Psychiatric
   30  Association, and
   31         WHEREAS, clinical research has led to approval of
   32  treatments for adults with TD by the U.S. Food and Drug
   33  Administration, and recognition and treatment of TD can make a
   34  positive impact on the lives of many people experiencing serious
   35  mental illness or gastrointestinal disorders, and
   36         WHEREAS, it is important to raise awareness of TD among the
   37  public and the medical community, NOW, THEREFORE,
   38  
   39  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   40  
   41         That the week of May 5, 2024, is recognized as “Tardive
   42  Dyskinesia Awareness Week” in Florida, and those experiencing
   43  uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements are
   44  encouraged to consult their health care provider regarding their
   45  symptoms.
