    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing and commending H. Lee Moffitt
    3         Cancer Center and Research Institute for its
    4         contributions to the prevention and treatment of
    5         cancer and the search for a cure for cancer, and for
    6         its vision to transform cancer care through cutting
    7         edge science, high-quality clinical care, and
    8         innovative partnerships.

   10         WHEREAS, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research
   11  Institute was created by the Legislature in 1981, with
   12  construction of the main campus in Tampa beginning in 1983 and
   13  the center opening its doors in 1986, and
   14         WHEREAS, in 1997, Moffitt Cancer Center was awarded a
   15  National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant and,
   16  by 2001, had earned the prestigious NCI designation as a
   17  Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of its scientific
   18  excellence and its leadership in the discovery and development
   19  of more effective approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis,
   20  and treatment, and
   21         WHEREAS, bolstered by such national recognition and other
   22  accolades, Moffitt Cancer Center continues to attract top
   23  physicians and scientists from around the world to its team, and
   24         WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center annually provides care at
   25  its main and branch campuses to nearly 86,000 patients from all
   26  67 of this state’s counties, from all 50 states, and from 133
   27  countries, and
   28         WHEREAS, to accommodate a growing number of patients,
   29  Moffitt Cancer Center embraced plans for expansion, including
   30  opening Moffitt McKinley Hospital in 2023, and
   31         WHEREAS, over the course of 36 years, the number of
   32  employees at Moffitt Cancer Center has grown from 400 to more
   33  than 9,000, with an economic impact in this state of nearly $2.5
   34  billion, and
   35         WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center trains more than 2,800
   36  oncology professionals annually, and
   37         WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is a leader in
   38  groundbreaking discoveries in basic, clinical, quantitative, and
   39  population science, with Moffitt Cancer Center researchers
   40  playing key roles in the development of TIL therapy, a new
   41  curative treatment for lymphoma, and
   42         WHEREAS, these researchers also played key roles in the
   43  understanding of the genetic basis of cancer risk and in the use
   44  of mathematical models to inform adaptive therapy to reduce the
   45  risk of cancer recurrence, and
   46         WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is deeply committed to
   47  serving and engaging with diverse communities through outreach,
   48  education, and screening, and
   49         WHEREAS, to that end, Moffitt Cancer Center continues to
   50  work closely with its patient and community advisory boards to
   51  meet their needs and recognize their priorities; provide cancer
   52  education related to prevention, early detection, and clinical
   53  trials; and provide free screenings across this state for a
   54  variety of cancers, NOW, THEREFORE,
   55  
   56  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   57  
   58         That H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute is
   59  recognized and commended for its contributions to the prevention
   60  and treatment of cancer and the search for a cure for cancer,
   61  and for its vision to transform cancer care through cutting-edge
   62  science, high-quality clinical care, and innovative
   63  partnerships.
   64         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
   65  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to H. Lee Moffitt
   66  Cancer Center and Research Institute as a tangible token of the
   67  sentiments of the Florida Senate.
