1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to type 1 diabetes early detection;
3 creating s. 385.2045, F.S.; requiring the Department
4 of Health, in coordination with local school
5 districts, to develop informational materials on type
6 1 diabetes for the parents and guardians of students;
7 requiring that such materials be made available to
8 school districts and charter schools through the
9 department’s website; specifying requirements for the
10 informational materials; requiring the department to
11 develop the informational materials and a certain
12 methodology by a specified date; providing an
13 effective date.

15 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

17 Section 1. Section 385.2045, Florida Statutes, is created
18 to read:
19 385.2045 Type 1 diabetes early detection.—
20 (1) The Department of Health, in coordination with local
21 school districts throughout this state, shall develop type 1
22 diabetes informational materials for the parents and guardians
23 of students. The informational materials must be made available
24 to each school district and charter school through the
25 department’s website.
26 (2) The informational materials on type 1 diabetes must
27 include, but need not be limited to, all of the following:
28 (a) A description of type 1 diabetes, including the
29 associated risk factors and warning signs of type 1 diabetes.
30 (b) A description of the process for screening students for
31 early detection of type 1 diabetes using a blood autoantibody
32 test.
33 (c) A recommendation for further evaluation of those
34 students who display warning signs associated with type 1
35 diabetes or receive positive early detection screening results.
36 (3) By October 1, 2025, the department shall develop the
37 informational materials and a standardized methodology for each
38 school district and charter school to provide the parents and
39 guardians of first graders with the instructional materials
40 within 30 days after the beginning of each school year.
41 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2025.
