SEN. BULLARD CALLS ON GOVERNOR SCOTT TO LAUNCH INVESTIGATION INTO ARMOR PIERCING BULLETS IN SOUTH FLORIDA
TALLAHASSEE –Following on his call to request an investigation into the pipeline of armor piercing bullets into South Florida communities, State Senator Dwight Bullard (D-39) today sent the following letter to Governor Rick Scott’s office. Senator Bullard also made the request to Attorney General Pamela Bondi’s office.
The Honorable Rick Scott, Governor State of Florida
Dear Governor Scott,
As Senator of District 39 many of my constituents live in communities known for their striking contrast of sustenance versus survival: neighborhood stores are barren of fresh fruits and vegetables, while neighborhood streets are flush with armor piercing military-grade ammunition.
As night falls in many of these communities, families gather before twilight not to feast, but to fear. They lock themselves in to lock out those who prey the streets with high powered weapons that pierce a home’s walls as effortlessly as they pierce a child’s body.
During the current legislative session, despite a number of bills offered to address the lack of a statewide policy on reasonable gun ownership, the violence ravaging many of these neighborhoods continues, the body count rises, and the ammunition flows unabated.
While I may not be able to persuade fellow lawmakers of the pressing need to protect the lives of citizens as readily as they protect any and all interpretations of second amendment rights, I believe that as governor, you are in a unique position to do both.
To that end, this letter is to officially request that you use the powers of your office to instruct the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to join with local and county law enforcement and begin an investigation into the illegal supply pipeline of deadly ammunition freely flowing into these communities.
Be assured, it is not my intention to infringe or limit law abiding citizens’ rights to arm themselves. But - barring transforming these neighborhoods into open war zones - Floridians’ Constitutional rights to life and liberty are surely just as important and deserving of equal protection.
I look forward to your cooperation and your help,
Senator Dwight M. Bullard
