According to the Florida Department of Health Trends and Conditions Narrative, it states "Today's students face enormous challenges. Some of the most daunting problem relate to health and safety issues including abuse and neglect, violence, involvement in tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, asthma and behavior disorders. Students who face these challenges are more likely to fail or drop out of school and less likely to grow up into self-sufficient, productive citizens". |

Project Description: |
ARISE Foundation will provide staff training and ARISE Life-Management Skills health and Safety curriculum to middle school and elementary schools that have after school programs. The mechanics of the program work like this; An ARISE program specialist trains after school workers within the Miami Dade County School System. These men and woman are then able to teach the children and adolescents in their charge the ARISE Life-Management Health and Safety curricular for 45 minutes to one hour for a minimum of one session per week. These children and youth are learning age appropriate information on topics such as nutrition, weight control, physical fitness, stress reduction, school bus safety, substance abuse, refusal skills, seat belt safety, safety at home, outside and at school, hand washing, self-esteem, AIDS, STD's , good grooming, personal safety, dealing with bullies, and much more in the areas of health and safety. ARISE Foundations monitors the program by visiting after school sites, reflecting with the teaching staff, observing teachers conducting ARISE health and safety lessons, collecting program data and working with an independent evaluator to measure program success. |
