Requester: Elynor Kazuk Organization: Brain Injury Association of Florida, Inc.

Project Title: Be HeadSmart, Seniors! Brain Injury and Falls Prevention Project Date Submitted 1/14/2004 4:37:14 PM

Sponsors: Aronberg

Statewide Interest:
This project addresses the rising incidence of brain injury among Florida citizens over age 60. Between 2000 and 2003, the number of serious brain injuries among Floridians over the age of 60 rose 28%. As Florida's population ages, the numbers of these injuries will continue to grow as will the demand for state resource for care unless effective prevention strategies are implemented. There are no educational or injury prevention efforts in Florida that highlight the serious risk of brain injury for people over age 60.

Project Description:
Brain Injury Association of Florida's Be HeadSmart? Seniors! Project (the Project) is a multi-faceted and innovative approach that utilizes collaboration and partnerships within local communities to reach people over age 60 with messages about preventing brain injury. In implementing this project, BIAF will establish active partnerships and collaborations with local agencies that serve the targeted population, with state agencies including the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the [Florida Department of Health Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program], and with other private organizations such as the Florida Association of Homes for the Aging. The project is comprised of three components. The first requires distribution of an educational packet that enables people over age 60 to evaluate their environment and lifestyle and make informed changes to keep them safe. The project will distribute 40,000 of these packets. The second component requires presentation of HeadSmartz, A Cranium Challenge (HeadSmartz), a lecture-disguised-as-a-game that engages the audience in brain-building exercises that also encourage behavior change. HeadSmartz events will be staged in a minimum of 90 senior centers and other settings statewide, reaching approximately 3,000 individuals directly. The third component will introduce a minimum of 90 health and wellness professionals to critical information about brain injury and train them in the use of the HeadSmartz and other educational tools developed and tested by BIAF. These trained professionals will then have the ability to reach another 250,000 of Florida's citizens over age 60. HeadSmartz has been pilot tested and received overwhelming acclaim from our professional partners and the program participants. The Be HeadSmart? Seniors! project is currently working with researchers at the University of Florida to ensure the effectiveness of both our products and messages.
