Requester: John Walsh Organization: Alpha-1 Foundation

Project Title: Alpha One Program Date Submitted 1/8/2004 11:46:10 AM

Sponsors: Saunders

Statewide Interest:
Alpha-1 is a major risk factor for the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonery Disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and Florida, and the only disease in the top-ten killers that is increasing. Florida has 780,000 COPD sufferers; many of whom may be Alpha-1 deficient and improperly diagnosed. The ultimate impact of this program will be to reduce public and private health care costs through early intervention, to reduce the number of productive adults forced to turn to Social Security Disability, and to improve the health of thousands of Florida residents.
