Statewide Interest:
Delivery of substance abuse treatment to an underserved population. Drug and alchol addiction affects communities throughout the state. Elimination of the costly expenditures incurred for babies born with problems and illnesses associated with in-utero exposure to substance abuse.

Project Description:
The Mothers and Infants program truly exemplifies the mission of First Step in preventing and treating alcohol/drug addiction and associated didsorders, to promote fully functioning, productive individuals whose lives are positive.This proven program won the BEST PRACTICES AWARD for 2002-2003.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Over 130 pregnant substance abusing women with an average stay of eight months, has produced 120 drug-free babies saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospitalization and treatment costs. This is a four level treatment with the final transition reentry to the community making them productive and responsible mothers and citizens. The program has grown from 4 beds in 1995 to 12 beds currently, with the number of clients increasing from several surrounding counties. First Step has been treating addictions for 35 years, community based, licensed and CARF accredited. At present, 100% of babies are born drug free and 85% of the clients who complete treatment are employed at discharge.
