Project Description:
The major issue faced by the terminally ill is the fear of dying alone, hooked up to machines, in a sterile environment. Surveys have shown that most people want to die at home, surrounded by their loved ones, and in comfort, with pain under control. The most significant barrier to dying in comfort is to receive adequate pain control relief. But very few doctors are adequately trained in the proper application of pain control techniques. Educated consumers can direct the proper questions to their attending physicians, provide comfort to their loved ones, thereby reducing the fear of the dying process. Although there is a large amount of information on pain control available on the Internet, it is spread out among various sites, and much of it is academically oriented, located on sites run by university medical school website. Moreover, much of the information on pain control deals with pain in non-terminal cases, making it more difficult for the family to sift through information relating to only chronic illness to find information relevant to the terminally ill. The Hospice Foundation of America Pain Control site will offer useful consumer information on such pain control issues as: common misperceptions about pain management; common obstacles to effective pain management; normal side-effects of unrelieved severe, chronic pain; pain in advanced illness; why you may not be able to receive adequate pain relief; fears that doctors have about treating patients with severe pain; suggestions on communicating with your doctor about pain management; bibliography of readings on pain control; pain as the fifth vital sign. The site will also provide links to pain control sites, and feature an interactive component by offering direct contact with an MD specialist in pain control.
