Project Description:
Services will include statewide implementation of two alternative therapeutic school/vocational programs for older foster care children or adolescents with behavioral and/or emotional problems. Two older Florida-based human service providers with local community-based care networks and distance learning technologies will provide the services at the two sites to ensure needs are addressed in concert with available resources. Plans are for DISC Village, Inc. to implement an academy in Woodville (located in northern Florida) and Human Services Associates, Inc. (HSA) to implement an academy in Rivendell (located in central Florida). Each of the proposed vocational academies will provide specialized vocational academy type environment with adult mentors and mental health specialists to train the youth for independent living in a stable, cost-effective therapeutic environment. Residential housing will be made available; however, youth who reside in close proximity may participate on an "outpatient" basis. Participating youth will be given options to facilitate job skill development in several areas, including: construction, culinary arts, print shop production, auto mechanics, paint and bodywork, computer operations and optical technology. Preliminary plans are to serve approximately 80 adolescents at each site for a total of 160 participants served during the year.
