Project Description: |
) The Big Cypress Basin, a priority watershed, covering 2,400 square miles in Collier and parts of Lee and Hendry Counties. The major waterways include the Cocohatchee River, Gordon River, Henderson Creek, Barron River, and a large network of canals operated and maintained by the Big Cypress Basin unit of SFWMD. Other major flowways include Okaloacoochee Slough and numerous large cypress strands, including Fakahatchee, Corkscrew, Bird Rookery, Kissimmee Billie, and Picayune.
Key Efforts
� Construction of a water control structure in the headwater of Corkscrew Canal to prevent overdrainage from the Bird Rookery Swamp.
� Restoration of flowways in the Little Corkscrew Island - Corkscrew Sanctuary headwaters in the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW).
� Restoration of flowways of the Okaloacoochee Slough near CR 858.
� Stormwater management improvement in the Belle-Meade area.
Key Partners
The District has formed cooperative partnerships with federal, state, county and city governments; developers; citizen support groups; environmental organizations; and other nonprofit institutes. The list of partners include the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers, Collier County, National Audubon Society, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Watershed Council of Southwest Florida, Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
