Charlotte Harbor Post Hurricane Comparative Study

Requester: Dr. Kumar Mahadevan Organization: Mote Marine Laboratory

Project Title: Charlotte Harbor Post Hurricane Comparative Study Date Submitted 1/11/2005 3:53:06 PM

Sponsors: Bennett

Statewide Interest:
In 2004 Florida was struck by four major hurricanes, with extensive, but largely undocumented ecological consequences. Hurricane Charley struck Charlotte Harbor in the midst of on the nation's largest ecological study of estuarine health providing a unique opportunity to study the responses of ecosystem components to major environmental changes with potential to impact their future viability. These lessons are transferable throughout Florida and will improve coastal resource management.

Project Description:
Mote Marine Laboratory will determine the status and trends of riverine wetlands, Harbor seagrasses, oyster reefs, scallops, other bottom-dwelling animals, sharks and rays, fishes including recreational and commercial species, dolphins, and related forms. Special attention will be given to endangered species (sawfish, manatee, sea turtles) and to anthropogenic contaminants in sediment and tissues. Mote's unique pre-storm data base of 3 years will be used to determine which ecosystem components have been affected most, and Mote will advise state and local agencies of management and restoration needs.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Comparing ecosystem data already documented by Mote's Charlotte Harbor Investigation will provide Florida with definitive evaluations of a major hurricane's effect on coastal and estuarine resources ranging from natural impacts (destruction of mangroves) to human causes (fugitive contaminants, such as oil and gas spillage).
