Shingle Creek Stormwater - Reuse

Requester: Brian L. Wheeler Organization: Tohopekaliga Water Authority

Project Title: Shingle Creek Stormwater - Reuse Date Submitted 1/12/2005 11:44:42 AM

Sponsors: Dockery

Statewide Interest:
Provides an alternative water supply reducing demand on the Florida aquifer. Recharges Florida aquifer. Reduces some pollutant loading to the Kissimmee River Basin.

Recipient: Tohopekaliga Water Authority   Contact: Brian L. Wheeler, Executive Director
101 North Church Street   Contact Phone: (407) 518-2251
  Kissimmee 34741   Contact email: bwheeler@kissimmee.org

Counties: Osceola

Gov't Entity: Yes Private Organization (Profit/Not for Profit):

Project Description:
The project will consist of constructing an intake structure and pump station at Shingle Creek which will pump up to 4 million gallons per day of combined surface and stormwater through 3500 feet of 16 inch pipeline to the South Bermuda Water Reclamation Facility where it will be treated and used to meet the existing and future public access reuse water demands of the approximately 110,000 citizens served by the Tohopekaliga Water Authority. The increased availability of reuse will reduce the quantity of potable water used for irrigation by customers resulting in more water being available for drinking and potable uses. Also, reuse water in excess of the volume used directly by the customers will be used to recharge the Floridian Aquifer. The total cost of the project is estimated to be 3.1 million dollars. The Tohopekaliga Water Authority is requesting 50% funding for the project.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
This project will aid in the fulfillment of the mission of water quality improvement and water restoration through the development of a currently untapped source of supplemental water and aquifer recharge in the Kissimmee Basin to maximize overall water use efficiency. Specifically this project will contribute to the achievement of the following goals and objectives: -Reduce pollutant loading to Lake Tohopekaliga, a priority water body -Minimize Floridian Aquifer draw down through recharge via Rapid Infiltration Basins -Optimize use of the Floridian Aquifer through the increased use of reuse -Minimize Floridian Aquifer draw down by reducing demands through the increased availability of reuse
