Statewide Interest: |
The project will focus on older adults with mental health problems, building upon a successful substance abuse treatment model. The intervention and support services offered will reduce the need for more acute care services, which are more costly to the state. The program serves a statewide interest by meeting the needs of a Department of Children and Families target population who would otherwise not have access mental health care. |

Project Description: |
For more than five years, Coastal Behavioral Healthcare has offered Geriatric Therapeutic Services (GTS) to persons 55 and over who currently struggle with substance abuse problems or who have had problems in the past and may be at risk for relapse. We provide individualized intervention and support services in the client's home. This proposal seeks to enhance current programming by offering mental health services in addition to the current substance abuse services we already offer.
The GTS program for older adults focuses on social, emotional, educational, and relationship issues, with a goal of developing new and healthier coping skills. This can be translated into mental health programming, taking into account the characteristics unique to this population. Expanding the Geriatric Therapeutic Services program to seniors in need of mental health treatment in addition to substance abuse treatment will enable Coastal Behavioral Healthcare to reach out to hundreds of seniors not currently served.
