Project Title: University of Florida Veterinary Reponse Team Date Submitted 1/13/2005 10:20:09 AM

Sponsors: Rod Smith

Statewide Interest:
The State of Florida is a national leader in the horse and cattle industry. Hence the frequency of natural disasters such has hurricanes and floods plus the threat of exotic diseases such as anthrax and hoof-and-mouth disease pose a serious danger to the economic infrastructure of the state. In the event of a natural disaster of bioterrorism attack on livestock systems in the State of Florida, the UF-VRT will be prepared for immediate mobilization to assess the crisis and collect information regarding animal injuries, disease, loss and epidemology. In addition, the UF-VRT program will be equipped as a short-term triage center to provide primary veterinary care to animals in need, including livestock, horses, dogs and cats.

Project Description:
Attachment to be provided.

Is this a project related to 2004 hurricane damage? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Currently, the State of Florida has programs and protocols, through the Division of Animal Industry, that provide a veterinary response in the event of a natural disaster and/or exotic disease outbreak. The experiences gained during the hurricane season of 2004 indicated that, in addition to the current programs, there is a need for participation by the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine. As such, UF-VT would provide added resources to the relief efforts in the form of specialty trained veterinarians with wide-ranging expertise. Under the direct order of the Division of Animal Industry, the UF-VRT program would enhance the state's response to a veterinary crisis.
